Do not plagiarize this paper! If you do it will result in a zero for the project! Remember you must use your own words and give credit for other people's research within the internal documentation. I will be asking you questions during the oral presentations from you research paper. It goes without saying that if you do not know the information that it is in yor own research paper it will dramatically affect your grade!
Oral Presentation:
DUE NOVEMBER 19TH
*Teach the class about what you have learned regarding your country(topics covered in the research paper)
*Each presentation should be around 15 minutes long
*DO NOT READ TO ME!!!!!
*Part of your grade will be your creativity during the presentation. You are open to present the material in anyway you want. Overhead prejectors, dvd clips, audio tapes and cd's notes on the white board, handouts, puppet shows, dances, skits, plays, show me something different for the A!
*No power points! That will be the second semester project.
*Both partners must present and answer questions during the presentation.
*The largest factor in your grade is that you know the content and can convey that information to the rest of the class.
*Maps, flags, food, posters, display boards are not due until the actual fair and will not be grades until that time but many students over the years have used these props during their oral presentations!
Students in the class will be required to pay attention to the presentations and take notes because they will be taking a fifty point open note quiz after all of the presentations are over.
The grade for the oral/written report will be 100 points-the same as a regular test.
All written reports are due on monday, November 19th.
The oral presentations wil begin on Monday, November 19th and continue until every presentation is completed.
We will listen to at least two oral presentations per day.
You will know at least 2 days in advance when you are due to present.
Open Note Quiz:
*Taken in class after all the presentations are complete
*Students will be able to use any handouts or information they wrote down in their notes during the presentations on this quiz
*Quiz will be worth approximatley 50 points and will cover all the countries covered in that perticular class (about four/five questions per country)
*Students must pay attnetion and get any notes they missed to do well on this quiz- no xeroxed copies will be allowed- all notes must be in the students own handwritting.
Map/Flag Project:
*The flags should be something that you have made. I have seen them made out of material, painted, colored, sewn, on wood...not bought from a store or just run off by the computer!(although those can be used for your overall display, just not part of this grade)
*You should know the significance or story behind your countries flag. For example our thirteen red and white stripes represent the original thirteen colonies and the fifty stars represent the fifty states...
*The map should include the following items
-A legend or key that shows what the symbols, lines, colors... stand for
- Accurate lattitude/longitude lines (at least three of each)
- An accurate scale
- Major geographical features, rivers, deserts, lakes, mountains...
- Major cities
- Natural resources that are found within your country
- If you choose, you may include elevation or population on your map as well.
*The map should be colorufl, accurate, creative, and easy to read
*All you have to do is look around my room to see past maps and the time and effort put into those maps for the "A"

Judges:
First of all I would like to thank you for helping me judge this years geography fair. The schedule for the day, judges grade sheets, and a list of all the students and their projects are included in your packet.
Your mission is to visit the eight projects filled in on your grade sheets and give each project a score of 1-10. I have left two blank spots on your sheets for you to pick any two additional projects if you have time. There will be at least ten judges assigned to each of the projects and these scores will be added up for the overall grade. Generally speaking-a score of 7-8 is an average grade on the project, scores of 9-10 are reserved for the best projects on display and scores of 6 or lower show a lack of effort from the students. Remember these sophomores have had over three months of work on these projects. Please write comments down on the blanks so I can share these comments with the students when I assign their grade.
Here is a guideline of things to look for when you are judging these projects:
1) Food
*Have they prepared food for their country?
*Did the students make the food? Or was it taken from a package or catered?
*Does it illustrate the cultural significance or tratitions of the country?
2) Dress
* Did the students dress in a traditional outfit from their country?
*Can they explain the significance or meaning of their outfit?
3) Flag
*Did they produce a flag fromj their country?
*Was it hand made or was it bought at a stoe or copied from a book or internet?
*Can they explain the significance of the different colors, or symbols on the flag?
4) Basic Knowledge
*Do they have a basic knowledge of their country?
*Are they comfortable answering questions about the climate, economy, imports, exports, government, current leaders, geography, culture, tradition...?
5) Overall Display
*Did they put time into video, audio, visual aspects of the display?
*Do they have pictures, artifacts, currency, posters, or other items to illustrate the culture of the country?
*Is their display unique and show signs of creativity and effort?
6) Map(Even though this will be a separate 50 point grade it is part of the fair grade)
*Is the map clear and easy to read?
*Does it show symbols and a legend/key?
*Does it show latitude and longitude lines?
*Does is have an accurate scale?
*Does it show natural resources of the country?
*Does it show the major geographical features of the country?
*Is there a certain amount of creativity involved?
If you have and questions about the fair of your duties as a geography fair judge, feel free to contact me at (309) 530-5491. Please give me your score sheets by 3:15 on Friday. If you cannot find me, please put them in my mailbox or in my office. Thank You!
